Major Bantams Continue Their Winning Ways
2017-02-01The Kings Mutual Valley Wildcats Major Bantam hockey club continue to hold down the top spot in the Nova Scotia Major Bantam Hockey League after two hard fought wins on the road this past weekend. Despite entering the weekend missing two skaters due to suspension and battling through a number of injuries during the 2 games, the Wildcats used a balanced attack, clutch goaltending and great team defense to post a 5-1 victory of the Joneljim Cougars and a 3-1 win against The Novas.
On Saturday night in North Sydney the Wildcats scored three unanswered 3rd period goals to pull away for a 5-1 win over the Cougars. Dylan Schofield got the scoring started in the 1st period with a beautiful deke on a breakaway after receiving a stretch pass from Zachary Godbout. The teams traded goals in the 2nd period with Breet Reeves scoring his 1st of the season off a great pass from Cameron Whynot to give the Wildcats the 2-1 lead heading into the 3rd period. Connor Deluney would also pick up an assist on the Reeves marker. In the 3rd the Wildcats special teams took over. A Colby Ramsey power play goal, assisted by Schofield & Deluney made it 3-1 before another power play goal from Cam Whynot, assisted by Brent Levy would make it 4-1. A short handed goal by Deluney, assisted by Whynot, would close out the scoring. Despite only facing 10 shots goaltender Seth Routledge came up with a number of key saves in the 2nd period to keep the Wildcats out in front.
On Sunday afternoon the boys travelled to Port Hawkesbury for an always difficult match up with The Novas. The two teams had split the first two games of the season series and this game was once again a tightly contested affair. Neither team was able to generate much offence in a scoreless 1st period and it looked like the 2nd period would be more of the same until a late goal by The Novas gave them a 1-0 lead heading into the 3rd period. Due to a couple injuries suffered earlier in the game the Wildcats entered the 3rd period with 3 lines and 4 defencemen but they were able to dig deep and pull off the comeback. Once again the Power Play played a big role as Joe Parsons was able to connect twice with the man advantage to give the Wildcats a 2-1 lead. Blake Deacon picked up an assist on the first goal while Dylan Schofield helped out on the second. Grant Sanford made a couple big saves in the dying minutes and Brent Levy deposited a Connor Deluney faceoff win into the empty net to round out the scoring.
With their 2 wins the Wildcats sit with a record of 21-4-1-2 good for 45 points and top spot in the league standings. The Wildcats return home this weekend to play host to the Wear Well Bombers on Saturday at 5:00 and the Harbour Storm on Sunday at 1:30. On Saturday the Wildcats will be hosting their Children's Wish Maker game. Samuel Gidge will be our special guest that evening and all proceeds from the door as well as the 50/50 will be donated to the Children's Wish Foundation. We hope to see a big crowd out to make this a special night for Samuel!
