It was a strong showing for Nova Scotian born players in the 2016 Quebec Major Junior League draft that took place in PEI on Saturday, June 4th. Overall, twenty-five players from the Nova Scotia Eastlink Major Midget Hockey League were selected in this years draft- one more than the previous year. Among those drafted were a couple of goaltenders: Cole McLaren and Oliver Troop, both of which have had recent seasons with the Valley Wildcats.
Cole McLaren of Annapolis Royal was selected 129th overall in the 8th round of the draft by the Halifax Mooseheads. Coming off a strong rookie campaign with the Valley Wildcats Major Midgets (where he played twenty games and boasted a .910 save percentage), Cole says it was a “dream come true” to be drafted by a local team.
Subsequently, Cole McLaren was also drafted in the 2016 MHL draft 24th overall by the Pictou County Crushers. Cole has a bright future with lots of opportunity ahead of him!
Oliver Troop (a Valley Major Bantam graduate) was selected 152nd overall in the 9th round by the Quebec Remparts. After completing two seasons with the Valley Major Bantams, Troop finished the past season with the Newbridge Academy Gladiators Prep School.
We look forward to seeing what Oliver has has in store in his future!
The Valley Wildcats would like to congratulate these players on their success up to this point, and wish them the best of luck in their training camps with their respective clubs.
